Art is a form of language, what do you want it to say? - Drawing

Throughout this lesson we spent a lot of time discussing the creative process wheel and how to best assess your students art, their process and their abilities. One tip that I really appreciated today was that instead of always assessing your students final finished product, allow them to keep a art portfolio of all of their finished work and assess them on their abilities and improvement throughout the year. This is a great way to see how your students are improving and if they have gained any knowledge or techniques along the way. We also learned that you can have your students do art demonstrations, provide them with a topic and allow them to demonstrate their knowledge to the class, or create a think, pair, share activity that will promote class discussion. These were very useful tips that I hadn’t thought of or seen used in my time as a student or during placement. The elements of design that we focused on today were lines, space and value. We began by being provided with 2 large pieces of paper in which we had to fold and cut into a booklet. We then focused on a variety of different lines and how they can be represented in art using using different line formations and mediums.  We started our drawing notebook by having to recreate the bulletin board in our classroom as accurately as possible. This was quite easy for me a I believe I am good with spatial awareness and I found it quite fun. We were then provided with a picture of a stool as we had to colour all of the negative space in the image. Following this, we then had to recreate the image by then only drawing the negative space to create the same stool. Easy to say, I was not very successful at this as it was much more difficult to imagine and draw an object, without actually drawing that object. We also worked with our peers at our tables and were each instructed to draw some type of line on a paper and pass it around to each person at our table. We then were instructed to draw some lines and different size circles on a page and colour certain ones certain types of colours and add more detail such as a texture and a letter. This one was very interesting and when I looked at my peers, everyones was different even though we were all instructed to do the same thing. My favourite activity of the day was to create a person using charcoal but by not drawing any straight or identifiable lines, by making it look freeform like a fly flying around. For this activity, I drew a ballerina and I really enjoyed it. It was fun to try and draw something without drawing the shape the same way you typically would. It allowed me to be more creative and open with my expression. Overall this lesson was very stressful as I felt that as soon as I was working on one creation and understanding the concept, we had to move on to the next one immediately with no time to process the current creation I was working on. If I were to implement this activity into my classroom, I would choose to only have the students do 1 or 2 of the activities have allow them the time to use their creative freedom and expression in an appropriate time frame.
