The One Where They Learned Print Making

Image
In our last class today we focused on print making! This class was one that I was looking forward to as I was intrigued at what print making was and how we were going to implement it in class. We focused on the Grade 6 curriculum and we learned 6 ways of print making. The 6 methods that we explored were: stencils, collograph, mono print, styrofoam engraving, found objects and plasticine. The elements of design that print making focuses on most heavily is line and texture. During the lesson I learned that when you are teaching print making, it is important to teach your students balance and repetition as they are the two main aspects that print making is comprised of. Balance in this art form is when students need to arrange their element of design and create an equal amount of negative and positive space. Repetition is when there is a reputation of a single image repeatedly throughout the art piece. In this lesson, we were introduced to 6 methods of print making and were inst...

Life is art, paint your dreams

In class today we focused on the art form of painting. This was my favourite class to date as it allowed me to be creative without having to create something that needed to follow an example or look visually appealing.   Throughout this lesson we were taught 11 different ways to paint. These methods were: transparent and overlapping shapes, opaque primary colour, mixing secondary colours, mixing secondary colours, complimentary colours, warm and cool colours, tints and shades, monochromatic painting, crayon and resist, dry brush and sponge painting. I found it very enjoyable to explore each of the different techniques and mix different colours and styles together to create something new. We were provided with 3 different types of paint to showcase the techniques. The first type of paint that we explored was tempura powder paint, this paint is a powder that requires a small amount of water, that then spreads into a beautiful liquid paint. I found this paint to me ea...

Art is a form of language, what do you want it to say? - Drawing

Throughout this lesson we spent a lot of time discussing the creative process wheel and how to best assess your students art, their process and their abilities. One tip that I really appreciated today was that instead of always assessing your students final finished product, allow them to keep a art portfolio of all of their finished work and assess them on their abilities and improvement throughout the year. This is a great way to see how your students are improving and if they have gained any knowledge or techniques along the way. We also learned that you can have your students do art demonstrations, provide them with a topic and allow them to demonstrate their knowledge to the class, or create a think, pair, share activity that will promote class discussion. These were very useful tips that I hadn’t thought of or seen used in my time as a student or during placement. The elements of design that we focused on today were lines, space and value. We began by being provided w...

Line & Colour

Image
Today in class we focused on line and colour, and more specifically a few artists that are famous for their work using the two. The artists that we focused on were Van Gough, Picasso, Matisse and Mondrian. After learning about and viewing these artists work, we were instructed to chose two artists whose technique we admired the most and create our own art using their famous techniques. For this lesson, we were instructed to create a face using the two art techniques, by separating the face into cool and warm colours. For my two artists, I chose Mondrian and Picasso. I chose to mimic the box like style of Mondrian by separating half of the face into different size boxes, creating different features of the face using cool colours. For the other side of the face I used warm colours and chose to use Picassos style of blending in multiple colours at once. For this activity we were provided with pastels as our medium. Pastels are one of the materials that I always disliked as a ...

Texture

Image
Today in art, we spent some time discussing the art forms, our art portfolios and texture. More specifically, we spent a lot of time on texture and the different ways texture can be represented. We began the day by putting together our portfolios with paper tape and then we began learning about the 5 different types of texture that we would be exploring. We were shown 5 different forms of texture and had to choose 3. I chose rubbings, wallpaper and magazines that offer a visual texture. We were then instructed to draw 3 shapes, 1 small, medium and large. From there we had to use the shapes that we created and cover them with our desired materials. I chose to do a heart, a triangle and a abstract shape. I covered the heart in a magazine clipping that looked like textured nylons, the triangle in rubbings from a textured piece of plastic, and the abstract shape was filled with wallpaper. After we had all finished our 3 shapes, we were instructed to create an insect with wha...
